Cesarina Thompson, dean of the School of Health Sciences at American International College (AIC), has been named dean of the University of Hartford’s College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP). Provost H. Frederick Sweitzer announced that Thompson, who holds a doctorate in adult education and a master of science in nursing education and adult health, will assume her duties on July 1, 2018.

Since 2012, Thompson has been dean at AIC in Springfield, Mass, where she introduced several new programs, including a clinical doctorate in occupational therapy; increased the number of full-time faculty and students by 15 percent; and oversaw successful professional program accreditation reviews. Prior to AIC, she worked for 25 years at Southern Connecticut State University where she became a tenured full professor. She also served in a variety of leadership positions including interim associate dean of the School of Health and Human Services and chair of the Department of Nursing.

University of Hartford President Gregory S. Woodward said, “I am elated that Cesarina Thompson will be joining our wonderful team of deans at the University of Hartford. In an outstanding pool of candidates, her vision, practical experience, and professional expertise made her stand out. ENHP is a critical part of UHart's collective ongoing success and I believe that we are fortunate to have found just the right person to lead us into a very bright future.”

Provost Sweitzer added, “I cannot imagine being more optimistic about the future of ENHP under Cesarina’s leadership. Her diverse academic background as well as her warmth, intelligence, communication skills, and energy position her well for leadership here at Hartford.”

“I am delighted to be joining the University of Hartford as its new dean of EHNP” said Thompson. “The wide array of programs, schools, and colleges at UHart offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations and innovative program development in education and health sciences that will bolster the college’s position and appeal to future professionals.”

Thompson, who lives in Oxford, Conn, holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Bridgeport and earned her master’s and PhD from the University of Connecticut. She is a Fellow of the National League for Nursing’s Academy of Nursing Education and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing.

The University of Hartford’s College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions prepares students in a scholarly environment to teach, promote well-being, and become professionals for service to the community. The College offers more than 20 nationally accredited programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. To promote both research and scholarship, the College cultivates relationships with prominent local and national partners that offer rich collaborative learning and research environments for students, faculty, and community members.
