When Rochelle Louis ’16 first entered the University of Hartford, she would never have dreamed of speaking in front of thousands of people. But four years later, that’s what she’ll do when she delivers the “Charge to the Graduating Class of 2016” at the Undergraduate Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 15. Rochelle says her friends and professors helped her overcome her shyness and gain the confidence to audition for the role of student speaker.

“I owe it to the people I surround myself with,” explains Rochelle, a psychology major in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences. “They pushed me and motivated me to see the potential I hadn’t seen in myself.”

Rochelle, who is from Medford, Mass., is graduating summa cum laude. She also earned “University Honors with Thesis” distinction by maintaining a GPA of at least 3.25, completing 18 hours of honors coursework, and writing a thesis entitled “Perceived Motivation: Hindering and Refocusing Motivation in Marginalized Groups.” She also was vice president and secretary of the student group Women for Change.

Rochelle is applying for jobs in the field of human resources and hopes to work for a year after graduating. Then she plans to attend graduate school to study organizational psychology. Her ultimate career goal is to be a consultant.

In her speech, Rochelle offers advice to her fellow graduates, but she also has some wisdom for incoming University of Hartford students.

“Definitely try to find what your interests are and go out there and join a group or a club that matches your interests. That can help you find something you are passionate about and give you a better sense of what you want to do in the future.”
