The husband-and-wife team of JW & Melissa Buchanan, known as “The Little Friends of Printmaking” who first made a name for themselves through their silkscreened concert posters, will give a talk in the Auerbach Lecture Series, which is presented by the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School, on Thursday, April 16, at 2:30 p.m. in the University’s Wilde Auditorium. The talk, which is free and open to the public, is made possible by The Beatrice Fox Auerbach Foundation Fund.

You can spot The Little Friends of Printmaking easily in a crowd – their inky hands and clothes are a dead giveaway! Their work is just as distinctive. JW & Melissa Buchanan have branched out from silkscreened concert posters into further fields, designing fancy junk for anyone who would pay them money. In addition to their work as illustrators and designers, they have continued their fine-art pursuits through exhibitions, lectures, and artists’ residencies, spreading the gospel of silkscreen to those inclined to listen.

Their awards include honors from the Art Directors’ Club, American Illustration, and Communication Arts. Their work has been published in the books New Masters of Poster Design [Rockport], Juxtapoz: Poster Art [Gingko Press], and Handmade Nation [Princeton Architectural Press], among others, and has appeared in magazines including Bloomberg BusinessWeek, WIRED, and Sierra.
