Nearly two dozen children from the University of Hartford Magnet School will put their training to the test when they run in the Little Manchester Road Race on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Bennet Academy soccer fields, 1151 Main Street, Manchester. The third, fourth, and fifth graders are part of the “Flying Magnets,” a running club that also includes 15 student-athletes from the University’s cross country and track teams.

The children trained with the University runners twice a week, beginning in September. These University mentors will be spread out along the race courses to cheer for the young athletes as they compete in either the one or two mile race.

"The kids love it," said University Assistant Track Coach Mike DuPaul of the Flying Magnet program, which formed three years ago to encourage elementary school children to become interested in running and fitness. “It also benefits the college students. It gives them a new perspective and allows them to be leaders, even as underclassmen."
