Otto Wahl. a professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hartford, has written numerous research articles and given many presentations related to media depictions of mental illness and the stigma that this causes.
In part two of his interview, Wahl talks about the role of the entertainment media in perpetuating misconceptions about mental illness, and about organized efforts to combat misconceptions in film and journalism. He offers true descriptions of schizophrenia; bi-polar disorder; and forms of depression. He discusses grief management; self-medication; mental illness and children; and educating children about mental illness, to combat stigmatization.
