Study dance at The Hartt School Community Division

First arabesque in Studio 3The University of Hartford’s Hartt School Community Division (HCD) Dance Department is committed to excellence. Our ideals of respect, dignity, personal enrichment, and a professional approach are at the foundation of all that we do every day. At HCD, students of all ages come together to create, explore, and excel through the performing arts in an inclusive, diverse, and nurturing environment.

We love to dance. We work hard to make certain that each student receives training of uncompromising quality. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum of technical training, repertoire, and performance opportunities, designed to prepare students to pursue their individual goals, whether they be professional, collegiate, or life enrichment.

Classical ballet training is the core of the program, which offers three divisions of study for students beginning at age five. Other forms of dance are offered to expose students to the vast spectrum of the performing art of dance. Classes are taught by experienced, professional instructors, supplemented by guest artists, dancers, and choreographers from the broader dance community. Regularly scheduled classes are supplemented by master classes and workshops throughout the year.

Our youngest students begin their movement experience at age three in the Pre-K Program.

The Adult Program (adults and teens 15+) offers evening classes in ballet and repertoire. These classes are designed for teens and adults who are interested in an open enrollment, ongoing training program at the beginner or intermediate level. Class work strengthens and tones the body, increases flexibility, musicality, balance, and coordination in the context of dance movement. Students may purchase a single class, a class card, or enroll for the academic year. Appropriate dance attire of your choice is acceptable for these classes. These classes are not included in annual student productions, although many adult students choose to audition for roles in our annual production of The Nutcracker.

Youth classes in jazz, tap, and hip hop are open to all, based on age and training backgrounds. These classes are designed to give students the opportunity to broaden their dance vocabulary and repertoire. Classes are geared to different ages and levels of training. All new students must take a placement class and fill out a placement form.

HCD dance classes are held in the spacious studios of the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center (HPAC) in Hartford, Conn., close by the University of Hartford’s main campus. Our facility boasts 5 dance studios, two performance venues, and spacious public spaces with a secure parking area.
