Second Annual Community of Practice

A Partnership between the University of Hartford and University High School of Science and Engineering (UHSSE)

The Community of Practice is a collaborative partnership between University of Hartford and University High School of Science and Engineering (UHSSE) faculty and professional staff.  It is modeled after the business world: focusing on bringing together the best thinking and practices to produce the best product within a high functioning collaborative environment. The First Community of Practice took place a year ago on October 10, 2010 and served to initiate the partnership between faculties.  The October 10, 2011 Community of Practice allowed more time for generating new ideas and expanding current collaborations.

Opening Remarks - Provost Sharon Vasquez kicked off the second event on October 10, 2011 in the 1877 Club.  Her enthusiastic support of the partnership was endorsed by leaders from six of the University’s seven colleges.  Facilitating the event, ENHP Coordinator of School Partnerships, Suzi D’Annolfo, recognized the historical contributions of founding Deans Manzione and Voelker, founding UHSSE Principal Betti Colli, Associate V.P. and Dean of Magnet Schools Alan Hadad, and former ENHP Dean / current Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership Donn Weinholtz.

Hadad provided positive statistics on the record number and success of UHSSE students enrolled in on-campus college courses.  Matt Folan, in his first year as principal of UHSSE, spoke of the uniqueness of the partnership.

Student Participation - Eleven juniors, majoring in secondary education English or mathematics, acted as hosts and took part in the content discussions with University and UHSSE faculty.  These students are also enrolled in an University education class being held on site at UHSSE.  This practice, according to D’Annolfo, “makes their learning come alive.”

Discussion Outcomes - For a detailed list of the ideas generated by the faculties, see outcomes.  To become involved in the Community of Practice, contact Dr. D’Annolfo at 860.768.5356 or
