Research Explores Parent Leadership Issues and Information Access

Investigators:  Paige M. Bray, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education (principal investigator); Mary Gannotti, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy; Joan Pedro, Associate Professor of Education

In February, 2011, three faculty members from the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP) were awarded a $61,000 grant from the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund.  The grant supports a project to engage parent leaders from five Connecticut communities over the next 24 months.  The research will identify important elements of community-based parent leadership processes as parents work together to understand and improve parent information access in their communities. Experiences of parent leaders will be documented to inform the understanding of parent leadership as a component of necessary infrastructures in early childhood success.

Parent leaders, in collaboration with each other and the parents in their home communities, will identify their own questions and desired practical outcomes that will be documented in a planned issue book.  The research participants will share the practical outcomes of this study with peers through the Discovery Network.  Discovery, an initiative of the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, works to influence community change and policy reform to create an early childhood system that ensures early learning success for children of all races and income levels so they are ready for school by age five and are successful learners by age nine.

Faculty researchers Pedro, Gannotti, and Bray 

Pedro, Gannotti, and Bray (PI) will disseminate their findings through conference presentations, publications, and course inclusion. Proposed working titles of articles to be submitted for publication during 2012/2013 are:  Issues Book as a Tool for, and Result of, Parent Learning and Leadership, Phenomenon of Parent Leadership and Informed Action, and Parent Learning via Action Research.


This research is conducted under the auspices of the Center for Learning and Professional Education in the Institute for Translational Research in Education, Nursing, and Health Professions, at the University of Hartford.
