The Physical Therapy Student Association (PTSA) raised $1,000 this fall for the Connecticut affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an international organization dedicated to the fight against breast cancer.

The PTSA presented a check to Anne Morris, executive director of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Connecticut, on November 4, 2010. The donation was made in memory of Mary J. Kirby, the mother of PTSA faculty advisor Janet Gangaway, who lost her fight against breast cancer in July 2007. "We will continue to do our best to help raise funds for breast cancer research," Gangaway said. "We must find a cure."

The students raised the $1,000 through fundraising events throughout the month of October, which was both National Physical Therapy Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The students, led by Sarah Cochran (undergraduate president) and Cortney Hansen (graduate president), gathered donations from local businesses to put together a drawing for two gift baskets. In addition to holding a drawing, the students distributed pink bracelets, car magnets, and other breast cancer awareness items, along with informational brochures from the Komen organization, throughout the month of October.

The PTSA thanks their sponsors for the donations of the items in the baskets: Fairways Minature Golf and Batting Cages (South Windsor, CT), Monster Mini Golf (Windsor Locks, CT), Panera Bread (Cumberland, RI), Ben & Jerry's (West Hartford, CT), Outback Steakhouse (Manchester, CT), Moe's Southwest Grill (West Hartford, CT), Ruby Tuesday *Bloomfield, CT), Bloomfield Cinema 8 (Bloomfield, CT), Anthony's Drug Store (Providence, RI), Noella Spa & Nails (Avon, CT), SUNrenity Tanning (Manchester, CT), Campus Massage Therapy (West Hartford, CT), Alyssa Itzkowitz, and Heather Francoeur.
