The University of Hartford and the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC), through its Montessori Training Center of New England (MTCNE), have been working together to provide opportunities to educators interested in Montessori philosophy and pedagogy for many years. A new collaboration in 2010, the Montessori Studies Initiative, expands and formalizes the existing relationship with MTCNE through the Center for Learning and Professional Education in the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions (ENHP) at the University of Hartford. It creates an additional graduate degree offering and establishes a research component.
Montessori-focused Graduate Degree Programs: The University will now offer two graduate education degrees with a Montessori focus: one that combines the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Primary Diploma Course with graduate classes in Early Childhood Education and a new offering that combines the AMI Elementary Training Course with graduate classes in Elementary Education. Each results in a unique graduate degree with a focus in Montessori philosophy and pedagogy as well as contemporary studies in programs designed for preschoolers or elementary age students. Graduates of both programs can apply for a Connecticut State Teaching Certificate with a Montessori Unique Endorsement #110 allowing them to practice in public Montessori schools. Montessori-focused Research: The Montessori Studies Initiative is committed to advancing both qualitative and quantitative research in the field of Montessori education. For example, it is a current research partner with the University of Virginia in a longitudinal comparative study of students accepted and not accepted to public Montessori magnet schools through the Hartford Regional School Choice Office (RSCO) student lottery process. Faculty and community partners working together on the Montessori Initiative will seek out further opportunities to support similar research and scholarly activities.
