2017 Connecticut STEM Conference

Educators from across the region gathered at the Connecticut Science Center for a day of exploration, discussion, and learning at the sixth annual Connecticut STEM Conference. The day provided a forum for regional educators to engage in discussions and further their skills surrounding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The day began with keynote speaker Dr. Linda K. Barry sharing her personal story and challenging attendees to address the gender and race gap in STEM. Dr. Barry is an Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Connecticut Medical School.
  • Dr. Barry shared the life lessons she learned as she persisted through personal and societal adversity to become a surgeon. She encouraged the audience to bring these lessons back to their students.
    • Barry warned that if students don’t have a good foundation in the sciences that it will follow them for the rest of their life.
    • She reminded attendees to not give up on students. "Sometimes it may appear that others are successful and smarter, but they may simply know how to study better," Barry said.
    • Dr. Barry challenged the audience to provide an opportunity for all children to learn computer coding, and recommended the website www.code.org to encourage students to start learning early.
    • She also stressed the importance of mentors and students seeing a reflection of themselves in the work force.
  • Dr. Barry concluded “We need to focus on all of us, all the young kids, and develop all their strengths today. Today’s children need to reach their potential to become leaders of tomorrow.”
  • The conference’s panel discussion also addressed gender and race gaps and how educators can prepare students in the STEM fields. “Hidden Figures: Breaking In, Looking Up and Shattering the Newest Glass Ceiling” included panelists from industry, higher education and nonprofit sectors.

  • The day concluded with an interactive town hall meeting. In this open forum stakeholders from P-12 education, business and industry, educator preparation and the fields of STEM answered questions directly from the audience about their most pressing issues as educators preparing students in STEM. Panelists were:
