Entrepreneurial Center Receives Renewed $75,000 Grant from Prudential Foundation

February 1, 2016

The University of Hartford is pleased to announce that The Prudential Foundation has awarded the Entrepreneurial Center (EC), located on the Asylum Avenue campus in Hartford, a renewed grant of $75,000. The Foundation’s first award to the Center was made in 2011. The award will be used to support the Small Business Technical Assistance Training Program, which provides training, business advising, and technical assistance to aspiring and established Connecticut small business owners.

The Prudential Foundation continues to support the EC based on its track record of success. During 2015, the EC assisted in 63 business startups, over $1m in capital infusion, the creation of 169 jobs and the retention of 1287 jobs.

According to Sandra Cahill, Entrepreneurial Center Director, “The target clients of the Small Business Technical Assistance Program are micro-enterprises who do not have the resources to hire business-to-business services to assist with the start or expansion of their businesses. Although the action plan and desired outcomes will vary with each participant, the overall objective of the program is to help the entrepreneurs start or grow their small businesses by creating a business and/or marketing plan, gaining access to capital, improving cash flow, increasing revenue and/or creating jobs.”

Through EC programming, a team of experienced staff, local small business experts, and resource partners provide entrepreneurs with a number of services including:

  • Training and roundtables for business and professional growth
  • One-on-one business advising
  • Women’s Business Center
  • Individualized technical assistance for business plan development, financing, hiring, contracts, marketing, government contracting, tax planning and more
  • Comprehensive business planning courses
  • Connections to small business resources

The University of Hartford’s Entrepreneurial Center provides hands-on coaching and business training for new and expanding small businesses, as well as aspiring entrepreneurs, throughout Connecticut. Part of the nationally-renowned Barney School of Business, the Center helps small business owners and employees to gain the business skills needed to succeed in the marketplace through business advising, technical assistance, educational programs, and networking events.
