Ivana Milanovic, professor of mechanical engineering, CETA, published a research paper at the 50th American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)/American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)/Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)/American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) conference in Cleveland, Ohio. The Joint Propulsion Conference focuses on identifying and highlighting how innovative aerospace propulsion technologies powering both new and evolving systems are being designed, tested, and flown.

The research paper, "RANS Simulations for Sensitivity Analysis of Compressor Transition Duct," was coauthored with John Whiton, Razvan Florea, Stephen Lynch, Gregory Tillman, and Mark Stucky of United Technologies Research Center. A numerical investigation of a strutted annular transition duct was undertaken to assess the UTC flow solver as an investigative tool and examine the influence of duct length and Mach number on pressure loading. The current study suggests that modern computational fluid dynamics can be used in duct design as an alternative to time- and resource-consuming measurements to rapidly evaluate broad regions of design space, provide better spatial resolution, and determine the interplay between flow physics and the duct geometry.

This work was carried out while Milanovic was on a sabbatical leave from the University of Hartford.
