The University of Hartford offers a variety of short-term study abroad options for students. These programs range from three to six weeks, and typically occur during winter and summer terms.

TURKEY: January 3 to January 17, 2010

Receive credit for AET 486: Architectural Monuments (3 credits) or ARC 586: Architectural Monuments (3 credits)

The course aims to introduce the historical evolution of the built form of Istanbul with special emphasis on the urban formation within the walled city. There will be a focus on the most significant structures of Istanbul and its architectural history. While discovering the city in urban scale, the course explores various urban monuments, each unique in its architectural setting and artistic creation; but all related to one another. Students will get the experience of architecturally weaving the city and its history into a complex and complicated, yet exceptionally unique story.

COST: $1,989 – includes tuition, housing, breakfast and lunch, scheduled museum visits and excursions, in-country transportation and MEDEX (Emergency Medical Assistance).


INDIA: January 3 to January 16, 2010

Receive credit for AUCX 190 (3 credits).

A service learning project designed to support community development in Abheypur, India, a small rural village. Bringing together a number of disciplines to work on village infrastructure (e.g., maintaining reliable sources of potable water), students will get hands-on experience in creating and maintaining sustainable technology. They will also assist in supporting grassroots democracies in which the villagers have a major role in designing, generating, monitoring, and maintaining projects. Through readings, seminars, and activities, students will learn about traditional societies and the complexities that emerge in the interplay between high tech cultures and ancient values and practices. (Written and Oral Communication and Responsibility for Civic Life) (This course meets an AUCC requirement.)

COST: $2,345 – includes tuition, roundtrip airfare from JFK, housing, some meals, in-country transportation and MEDEX (Emergency Medical Assistance). The deposit for this program is due October 30, 2009.


TURKEY: January 4 to January 12, 2010

Receive credits for AUCX 190 (AUCC equivalent) – 3 credits.

This multidisciplinary course seeks to explain and analyze the musical and cultural highlights of the Ottomans and modern-day Turkey, with a focus on Turkey as a cultural center between Europe and Asia, and will cover historic events that are central in Turkish political and social history. Among the music topics are classical Turkish music, Ottoman Empire music, Janissary military band music, and popular contemporary "arabesque" music. (This course meets an AUCC requirement.)

The course highlights will include the Grand Bazaar that dates back to 1461, the classical city of Troy, Bursa, a city of commerce, the Gallipoli military site, Topkapi Palace, and a cruise up the Bosphorus through the Istanbul strait.

Cost is $3,085 and includes tuition, airfare, lodging, tours, entrance fees, breakfast and MEDEX (Emergency Medical Assistance).


FRANCE: May 19 to June 4, 2010

Receive credits for AUCX 190 (AUCA /AUCW equivalent): Landmarks of France and ENG 333W: Studies in Creative Writing – Travel Writing

This summer, travel and write about the culture and history of France from the Louvre to the D-Day Landing site, from prehistoric cave paintings to Monet's Water Lilies, from medieval castles to gothic cathedrals, from the Eiffel Tower to the the sunny Mediterranean South. What does it mean to be a traveler? How do we understand the French and their culture as we dine, wander, see art and artifacts from pre-history to the contemporary moment? Join us for the adventure!

Cost is $4,544 and includes tuition of 6 UH credits, housing, scheduled excursions, 2 group meals and MEDEX (Emergency Medical Assistance). Airfare not included.


CHINA: May 2010 – Exact dates TBA

Receive credits for AUCX 190 (3 credits)

The focus of this course will be on the social, ethical and political contexts of schooling in the Chinese culture. This course will help to broaden students' experiences and understanding of the cultural aspects of China and to develop a sense of cultural relativity through comparative study of Chinese and American educational experiences.

Experience the real China during this 12-day journey to the other side of the world. Visiting Beijing, Xi'an, Jinan and Shanghai, you will begin to see the old, the present, and the future China.

* Five days and nights living and working in a Chinese school while visiting in the city of Jinan.
* Visit an authentic Hutong Family in Beijing.
* Experience Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Great Wall.
* Participate in a Dumpling Dinner Banquet, and eat at the famous Peking Duck Restaurant.
