Johnson Uses 4-Goal Week To Earn League Honors
Junior Chanel Johnson capped off her most successful week as a Hartford Hawk by earning America East Player of the Week accolades as announced by the league office on Monday. Johnson's honor comes after scoring four goals in a pair of Hawk victories this past week, including a hat trick against the Stony Brook Seawolves.
Johnson erased a late first-half goal from the Seawolves with a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period giving the Hawks a 2-1 advantage. For the first of those goals, Johnson collected a forward pass from Kristen McAdams, and after dribbling forward and towards the center of the field, she fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box beating the keeper to the left corner.
Just over six minutes later, Johnson beat out the Seawolves defense to a ball that deflected off of one of the defenders. After collecting, the striker turned and fired through a pair of defenders and hit the left side of the net out of the reach of Stony Brook's keeper.
After providing a game-tying and a go-ahead goal, Johnson netted the game-winning tally with 1:36 remaining in the first extra period ending the match with a golden goal. Her third score of the night came on a pass from Arielle Aikens as she blasted in a shot from the corner of the box about 15-yard out that beat Stony Brook's keeper and sent the Hawks into celebration mode.
On Sunday, Johnson provided her second game-winning goal of the week as the first in Hartford's four-goal rout of the UMass Lowell River Hawks. Her fourth goal of the week came early in the 17th minute as she combined with sophomore Elise Galipo to score on the rebound from an earlier attempt.
