Women's Soccer Legend Pia Sundhage to Speak
Pia Sundhage, head coach of the Sweden Women’s National Soccer Team and former gold medal-winning coach of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, will be on campus Tuesday to give a public lecture and hold a forum with students.
Sundhage's public lecture will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Lincoln Theater. The event is part of the Rogow Distinguished Visiting Lecturers Program, and is presented with support from Newman's Own Foundation. Sundhage's lecture is the latest in a series of events on campus celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the federal law giving women equal access to educational programs, including athletics.
The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. To order tickets, call the University Box Office at 860.768.4228 or 800.274.8587.
Earlier in the day, Sundhage will hold a special Q&A forum just for students. The forum with Sundhage, which is free and open to all students, will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., in the intramural gym/volleyball arena at the Sports Center. No tickets are necessary.
Sundhage is one of the most respected coaches in women’s soccer and is regarded as one of the world’s all-time greatest female players.
She served as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team from 2007-2012. Under her leadership, the U.S. team won two Olympic gold medals (2008 and 2012), went to the finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and compiled a record of 33-1-2.
Sundhage won the Swedish Cup three times as a player and once as a coach, and she was named Sweden’s Sportswoman of the Year in 2008. In 2007 she served as assistant coach for the China Women’s National Soccer Team during the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
