NSBE Zone Conference by Merlene Buchanan '19

Submitted by Merlene Buchanan

Our chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) traveled to the first Zone Conference of this school year, hosted at the University of Rhode Island. Our Zone covers Southern New England, bringing sister colleges and pre-collegiate chapters together for professional development and workshops.

A Personal Finance workshop gave advice for budgeting, credit cards and reports. This called for career planning for retirement, emergency funds, investments and vacation. The focus was to make a habit of saving now, so is not such a challenge later, a higher paying job and higher consequences. Attendees were warned to avoid store credit cards that are restricted to the printed store, and have high interest. However, cards themselves differ in benefits, such as cash-back shopping or gift-cards, but also in interest rates.

A Q&A panel of current Raytheon employees encouraged attendees to strengthen their weaknesses via books and asking questions from others. They mentioned their personal weakness in budgeting and settling in a position. It was strongly encouraged to make a 3-5 year plan, and to acknowledge and adapt to failed attempts.

This Zone Conference was beneficial to our chapter and it looks forward to sharing lessons learned with those unable to attend.
