Increasing Access To Clean Water Throughout Abheypur

A joint effort between the University of Hartford students and the Hartford EWB Professional Chapter ( is helping the residents of Abheypur by increasing access to clean water for all villagers. This is being accomplished by the designing, funding, and implementing of the following two systems:

  • Connection of the Girls School Water Storage Tanks to the waterless “potter’s” community in the village. (We affectionately call this part of Abheypur “potter’s village” because this is where the very skilled and dedicated mason and his family live who built the foundation for the water tanks at the girls primary school. He is also the potter in the village and tried his best to teach our EWB team how to throw a pot and very generously gave each member of our team a souvenir pot to bring back home.)

  • Rehabilitation and redevelopment of the non-working public hand pumps in the village.

The need for these projects comes directly from the villagers. Our team’s assessment confirmed that public access to water would further benefit all of the women and girls of Abheypur whose families cannot afford a private well. As with all our projects, we feel that it is important to partner with the villagers most impacted by the accessibility of these water supplies so that the construction materials and techniques used are sustainable and appropriate.
