Completing a FERPA Waiver

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, is a federal law that establishes the rights of students with regard to academic records, and ensures students of the right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to those records.

A FERPA Waiver is a means for students to give the University of Hartford permission to discuss and/or disclose their academic records with someone other than themselves (i.e., a parent, guardian, etc.).

To create a waiver for a specific person, follow these directions:

  1. Sign in to your Self-Service Center account online.
  2. Click on Student Main Menu.
  3. Click on FERPA Information.
  4. Click on Update FERPA Contacts.
  5. Add new contact or edit existing contact accessibility.
  6. Accept the FERPA Waiver terms.
  7. Enter in all pertinent information on the person being given permission, including the address and phone number.
  8. Select what you want the person to permission to access.
  9. Click Submit to submit the waiver.
