Accelerated Master of Arts in Communication

The Accelerated Master's Degree program is open to exceptional undergraduate students with a Communication major at the University of Hartford who know in their junior year that they wish to pursue a Master’s degree. If that describes you, we encourage you to take advantage of this terrific opportunity to earn a BA and an MA degree in Communication in 5 years.

To qualify for the program, you must have:

  • An overall GPA of at least 3.0, based on a minimum of 70 credits,

  • And have a GPA of at least 3.25 in the Communication major, based on a minimum of 18 credits.

You need to apply by April 1 of your junior year.

The requirements for the Accelerated Master's program are the same as for the regular graduate program. Please meet with the graduate director early in the spring semester of your junior year to develop a plan to apply for the accelerated Master's program.

Once you are conditionally accepted to the Accelerated Master’s Program, you become eligible to take the 9 credits of graduate communication courses while still an undergraduate. These 9 credits are completed during the summer between the junior and senior year, or during the regular semesters of the senior year and are in addition to the 120 credits required to earn your Bachelor's degree.

When you complete the BA in Communication and if you have earned grades of B or better in each of the 9 credits of graduate coursework, you are accepted as a matriculated student in the Master of Arts program and would need to complete the 24 additional credits of requirements and electives to earn the MA degree. Individual plans for achieving the remaining 24 credits will be developed with the help of the graduate director.

To apply, just complete the standard application for graduate study, including three letters of recommendation, two of which must come from faculty in the School of Communication. Students will be notified of the school’s decision by the end of the semester.
