Honors Program

Seeking an even greater challenge and enriched academic experiences? Then consider the University Honors Program. Whether you enter the University as a freshman or a transfer student or you are a current student, you may be eligible to participate in the Honors Program.

There are two ways to take advantage of the Honors Program. First, you can take honors courses such as honors sections of general education and All-University Curriculum requirements. Some semesters we offer honors sections of communication courses like CMM 110 Introduction to Communication or CMM 310 Political Communication. The College of Arts & Sciences offers multidisciplinary honors seminars every semester on fascinating topics like “Monsters and Villains,” “Women, Weight, Worry” and “Building a Culture of Peace.”

Compared to regular courses, honors courses are smaller in size, encourage more class discussion and faculty-student interaction, are enriched and accelerated, and often offer opportunities for conducting research. One other course option available is “contract honors” in which you take a regular course for honors credit by contracting with the professor to complete additional or more challenging assignments.

The second way to participate in the Honors Program is to complete the 18 credits of honors work to earn the special designation of University Honors on your diploma. This prestigious academic achievement, obtained by a small and select group of students each year, is seen as an asset by admissions directors of graduate programs and by prospective employers. As a student in the School of Communication, you would complete the Honors Program through the College of Arts and Sciences.

If you are interested in the Honors Program you should talk to your faculty advisor.
