Richard J. Cardin

Richard J. Cardin received a bachelor’s degree in English in 1962.

A very successful businessman for more than 45 years, Cardin has retained his belief in the importance of literature and writing and his close connection to the University of Hartford.

In addition to being a generous donor throughout the years, in 2003, Cardin established the Richard Cardin ’62 Endowment for the Development of the Humanities Faculty. The endowment supports faculty, students in the A&S Honors program, and the publication of student works such as Aerie, and also provides funds for the Cardin Reading Series, which brings poets and fiction writers to campus to discuss their work.

In 2011, Cardin received the Distinguished Alumni Award at Commencement. He is also a life regent of the University of Hartford’s Board of Regents and the former co-chair of the Steering Committee of the University’s 10-year, $175 million Campaign of Commitment, which ended successfully in 2008.

During a very successful 32-year career with United Parcel Service, working both domestically and abroad, Cardin’s focus was on organizational development, change management, and organizational behavior modification. He is now a director on the board of Cocona, Inc., in Boulder, Colo. He enjoys sports, literature, the arts, and fine wines. He and his wife, Lucy, reside in Coconut Grove, Fla., and Groton, Conn.
