Students apply for admission to the major programs after successfully completing (or testing out of) the 110-111 sequence in their chosen language. They then begin the language sequence by taking three 4-credit courses, namely: 210, 211 and 300, which make up the first 12 credits of the major.
SPA 210-211 Intermediate Spanish I-II [4-4] Courses emphasize communicative skills and language competence in a cultural context.
SPA 300 Literature, Conversation, and Composition [4] This course introduces students to literary analysis and the study of contemporary Italian culture while furthering their knowledge of complex grammatical structures and linguistic expression.
SPA 342 or 343* Studies in Spanish Culture [3+3] An intensive study of major figures, works, and cultural movements. Content varies from semester to semester. Courses are taught in Spanish.
SPA 484 Independent Study [1] Topic selected with instructor’s approval.
ML 470 or 471 Integrative Capstone [4] Capstone courses are open to junior and senior-level standing or by permission of instructor. These courses treat representative writers, genres, and cultural periods, and trains students to make comparisons and connections between different writers, periods, theories, and ideas in the several international literatures and cultures taught in the ML department. The content varies each semester.
